Doesn’t it sometimes feel as if we are living in a dystopian world, where trivial events seem to impact us more profoundly than mass tragedies? The proximity of violence and extremism, coupled with omnipresent fake news, intensifies an unsettling atmosphere, eroding our sense of security and stirring a profound sense of unease.

Browsing social media channels and encountering disturbing imagery leaves an impact, even when we simply swipe it away. The perpetual exposure to social injustice takes an emotional toll, fostering feelings of anxiety, anger, and helplessness. In response, avoidance, repression, and displacement become common defense mechanisms, whereby we unconsciously push certain feelings aside or redirect our emotions towards less threatening targets. For example, the frustration stemming from societal issues might manifest as irritability in personal relationships. We may find ourselves becoming adept at constructing mental compartments to neatly stow away the overwhelming emotions stirred by distressing scenes. We might even indulge in obsessive scapegoating, deflecting, and even elaborate rationalizations that defy every law of nature, which creates an even more complex emotional landscape.
Identifying these emotions for what they truly are could help harmonize the dissonance between our internal world and the external chaos. Balancing personal needs and broader social responsibilities is a complex task. In certain situations, prioritizing oneself may be necessary for maintaining mental health and overall well-being. Taking care of oneself allows us to be in a better position to contribute positively to our community and the world at large. However, these endeavors become selfish when they completely disregard the well-being of others, especially in situations where collective action is required.
Psychotherapy traditionally assists individuals with personal challenges, but it’s crucial to acknowledge the profound interconnectedness between individual and collective well-being. Our personal growth and fulfillment are intricately tied to the health and prosperity of the broader community. At the end of day, our well-being is truly optimized when society at large thrives.
